How to better engage your front-line employees in today's industry: Bryden Toh of Food Republic Singapore - Breadtalk Group

Becoming the employer of choice is essential to win the war of talent.

According to Food Republic's vice president (Food Atrium Division) for human resources Bryden Toh, consumers are now more conscious in connecting themselves to more information over their mobile devices. This has changed the business models in the QSR landscape, as well as marketing strategies and the required competencies for F&B employees.

“It is especially important and distinctive to a labour intensive F&B industry. The question is, how to better engage our front-line employees?” says Toh.

He says retention is more than just about offering a higher compensation package, an opportunity in career development, or a culture of an open communication.

“In our current business evolving model, companies needs to be people-orientated, resilient and digitalized to succeed. Besides enabling and empowering employees, engagement is critical to business success,” he added.

When asked about the biggest hurdles in the current landscape, Toh cited labour crunch in an ageing society. The ability to embrace technology without compromising flexibility and human touch was also highlighted.
