Pizza Hut exec answers the three key questions in the war for talent
She shared her thoughts at the biggest QSR industry event in Asia.
Challenges like the pandemic may vary from time to time but what doesn’t change is the war for talent, according to Pizza Hut Chief People Officer, Sanhcita Singh.
“When we talk about talent war, what are we really trying to solve for?” Sanchita asked other business leaders at the QSR Media Asia Deliverect Conference & Awards which was held last 27 April in Singapore.
“The first question to ask ourselves as recruiters, as organisations who are hiring is why should this talent choose me and not somebody else?”
Sanchita said they are constantly questioning themselves about what they are doing to grow the brands and what they are doing to be a good organisation. This all boils down to sustainability.
“As an organisation, the values and purpose, what is it we are really focusing on? At Pizza Hut we launched "An Equal Slice for Everyone". So what are we really doing? We are going back to our community and saying we want to focus on providing education, employability, and entrepreneurship. We are going back to the communities we operate in saying let’s partner, let’s help this community either to educate, create employability, or create entrepreneurship.”
An example she gave is how they are working in Sri Lanka to help the specially-abled employees and introduce them to the job markets.
Another key question is about how to retain talent. And what works for Yum! is what Sanchita called recognition culture. Sanchita recalled that when she joined Yum ten years ago, she was shocked to be recognised for just doing her job.
That’s when I realise that’s what separates Yum! Brands from other companies. We believe that as leaders the best thing you can do is to keep on motivating and not wait for a reason to celebrate,” Sanchita said.
The last question business should answer is what is their strategy to upskill and give career growth opportunities to employees. For Sanchita, this leads to a growth mindset. Pizza Hut established a learning mechanism they called the Hut University use of digital tools called HutBot to help employees improve their skills.
