Shakey's restarts expansion plan, targets 30 new Philippine stores

The company aims to respond to an increasing need for convenient and flexible out-of-store options.

Shakey's Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. is set to restart its Philippine expansion with the opening of 30 stores this year, after it was put on hold in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a regulatory filing, the company said it plans to open 15 new Shakey's stores and 15 new Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken outlets to add to the 245 Shakey's and 34 Peri-Peri outlets it had in end-2020.

"With evolving consumer habits brought about by the pandemic, our network expansion strategy has likewise adapted to ensure we maximize both our in-store and out-of-store presence," Shakey's president and chief executive officer Vicente Gregorio said.

"Our new openings this year will cater not only to our guests' dine-in preference, but also their increasing need for more convenient and flexible out-of-store options.

The upcoming Shakey's stores are expected to enter second and third-tier cities outside Metro Manila, whilst Peri-Peri outlets will be put up in unserved markets.

The company is also looking to build locations that both brands to maximize its existing asset base, on top of the ghost kitchens or kitchen extensions.

"2021 will definitely be an exciting 'bounce-back' year," Gregorio added.

Shakey's also owns the perpetual rights to the namesake brand for the Middle East, Asia (excluding Japan and Malaysia), Australia and Oceania.

Previously, it secured a seven-year franchising agreement with Singapore's Brenrich Pte. Ltd. that will allow it to enter the Lion City, with a new store opening at the Lucky Plaza mall along Orchard Road.
