
Asia is second most expensive region to buy coffee: study
Singapore, in particular, was ranked the eight most expensive country to get a tall latte.
Asia is the second most expensive region to buy a tall latte from Starbucks, with Singapore ranking as the eighth priciest country globally at SG$6.20 (US$4.50).
A study from finance research firm Finder revealed that a hit of coffee in the region has an average price of US$3.72. East Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan and Macau had the highest average cost at US$4.23, followed by Western Asian countries (i.e. Bahrain, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates) at US$3.80 and Southeast Asian countries (i.e. Brunei, Singapore and Thailand) at US$3.34.
The cheapest areas in the region are South Asia (India) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan), costing US$3.30 and US$3.19, respectively.
Prices are the steepest in Europe, with coffee lovers paying for a cup at an average cost of US$3.92. The least expensive part of the world to buy coffee is Africa coming in at US$2.27 – although this included a sample size of just Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. The second cheapest region was Oceania at US$3.18, including Australia and New Zealand.
Topping the list of 76 countries studied is Copenhagen, Denmark, where the same coffee costs the equivalent of US$6.05 whilst persons in Istanbul, Turkey pay just US$1.78 for the same tall latte.
