Food delivery monthly spend increased by 22% in Hong Kong in 2022
One in five consumers is spending more than HK$2k per month on food deliveries.
Monthly food delivery spending in Hong Kong has increased by 22% from HK$1,095 ($139.49) in 2019 to HK$1,334 ($169.94) in 2022, a survey by Deliveroo revealed.
Hong Kong consumers are also spending 23% more on food deliveries compared to 12% in 2019.
Whilst the ever-growing popularity of food delivery applies to the entirety of Hong Kong, some districts show notable differences in spending amount. In the past year, the highest average monthly spending on food delivery services came from Wan Chai, Central and Western, and Yuen Long. Notably, consumers from Hong Kong Island are more likely (22%) to reward themselves for hard work or achievements with food delivery services than respondents from Kowloon (14%) or New Territories (15%).
The survey also revealed a surge in the popularity of food delivery services amongst more mature generations. For example, over 4 in 5 (83%) respondents aged 46-55 acknowledge a year-on-year increase in food delivery service use (compared to the overall average of 77%). In addition, over three-quarters (76%) of respondents aged 46-55 indicated that they will maintain or increase their use of food delivery services in the next year.
Meanwhile, the top five reasons most Hong Kong consumers for using food delivery services are, not wanting to cook (36%), being interested in discounts and promotions offered by food delivery platforms (28%), not wanting to go out when the weather is bad (26%), no time to prepare meals (25%), and wanting to avoid crowds due to safety concerns (25%)
